Survive Spring Allergies - Gulfshore Chiropractic Clinics Newsletter April 2022
Spring Time is Here!
Hooray for April! Springtime showers and flowers in bloom are a sure sign that spring has arrived in Southwest Florida. In this newsletter, we discuss surviving seasonal allergies, a sweet treat that is healthy AND delicious, and an all-natural product to help combat those pesky bugs this spring.
"March is a time of transition. Spring kicks off in the latter half of the month but depending on where you live, that may be news to the thermometer.
Be that as it may, there’s no mercury minimum to get the ball rolling with a little spring cleaning. And while it’s important to beat those rugs and freshen up your living area, it’s just as important to take care of your mental space. With that in mind, let’s give you some tools to sweep away those cobwebs of neglect from the dusty corners of your happy place!"
Fuel Your Brain
There’s a growing body of evidence that the old adage “You are what you eat” applies not only to your belly size and cholesterol numbers. The field of nutritional psychiatry examines how the foods we consume can affect our brain health. As it turns out, the foods that are good for our bodies—fruits, vegetables, seafood, and small amounts of lean red meat (just to name a few of the heavy hitters)—are also good for our minds.
At this point, this should be a no-brainer. Whether it’s inside or outside…whatever you need to do…however you need to do it…get your body moving! As weather permits, go for a walk. Dance along to a YouTube video. For added results, record yourself doing it and send it to a friend to improve their mental health. (They say laughter is the best medicine, right?) The link between movement and mental health is strong. We’ll say it one more time: Get. Moving.
Talk to Someone
If you had a pressing physical need—a broken bone, say, or a nasty stomach bug—you likely wouldn’t hesitate in seeking help from a professional. Yet for many, there’s a persistent stigma associated with consulting a professional when it comes to mental health matters. It’s vital to prioritize how you feel over worrying about what others will think.
"For many Florida residents, allergy season can be the most difficult time of the year to get through. While Florida is not subject to freezing temperatures, allergens are prevalent due to routine seasonal droughts in combination with warm, dry weather.
Usually, allergies come and go with the seasons due to sprouting plants and pollen in the air. Spring tends to be the worst season for allergy sufferers as flowers and plants are coming back to life after a long winter."
What Causes Allergies in Florida?
The main cause of allergies in Florida is ragweed, as long summers lead to allergies due to foliage having the optimal weather to grow.
Apart from allergies to plants, mold is the second largest cause of seasonal allergies in Florida during the fall season. Mold allergies are unlike pollen allergies because when the temperature drops, mold simply becomes benign (instead of dying). Where there are humid and moist conditions, you can count on mold thriving as it is the perfect environment for it to grow. If you are sensitive to allergies, ensure that you never leave water standing, and try to make your home as dry as possible.

How To Reduce Allergy Symptoms
Limit your time outdoors during the day, and opt to only go outdoors in the evening as pollen counts are substantially lower come nightfall.
Wear a mask if you intend on mowing the lawn or partaking in garden work.
Do not plant flowers that will flower, as the pollen in them will make you ultra-sensitive to their allergies.
Clean your HVAC system on a regular and consistent basis as the filter can collect a plethora of allergy-causing agents
